Callendar House

Callendar House is a stately mansion on the edge of Falkirk whose origins date to the 14th century, though its current French-château-inflected facade — with rounded turrets and symmetrical windows — reflects later enlargements. The house has a notable roll call of historical visitors: Mary Queen of Scots sought shelter here on several occasions, and Bonnie Prince Charlie used it as his headquarters during the 1746 Falkirk campaign. The estate has held Category A listed status — Scotland's highest level of architectural protection — since 1960, while its designed landscape was added to the national Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in 2007. Today managed by the Falkirk Community Trust as a local history and fine art museum, it is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and is fully wheelchair accessible.
