Barran Temple

The Barran Temple, locally known as the Throne of Bilqis, is one of the most important surviving religious monuments of the ancient Sabaean kingdom, situated near Ma'rib in Yemen — once the capital of a flourishing South Arabian civilization. For centuries, local tradition held that the monumental column ruins were the literal throne of the Queen of Sheba, the ruler referenced in the Quran as Bilqis and in the Old Testament as the sovereign who visited the Prophet Solomon. Archaeological excavations in the early 20th century uncovered colonnades and inscriptions in Old South Arabian script, identifying the site as a pre-Islamic cult sanctuary dedicated to the moon god Almaqah. Designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple rises from the stark desert basin of Marib — a place where scholarly archaeology and deep religious legend remain stubbornly intertwined.
