Al-Saleh Mosque

The Al-Saleh Mosque on the southern edge of Sanaa is Yemen's largest mosque, its central prayer hall spanning over 13,500 square metres with capacity for 44,000 worshippers. Inaugurated in November 2008 by its namesake, then-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, the complex was a state prestige project that tied religious architecture directly to the political legacy of a leader who later became a central figure in Yemen's civil war. The design blends classical Islamic forms — grand domes, paired minarets — with contemporary construction methods. Unusually for a mosque of its scale in the region, the site is open to visitors of all faiths, making it one of the few places in Sanaa where non-Muslims can freely enter and observe the interior.
