Baring Head Lighthouse

Baring Head Lighthouse stands on a windswept promontory south of Wellington where Cook Strait opens toward the Pacific — one of the most exposed stretches of New Zealand coastline. The concrete tower was built in 1935 and remains operational under Maritime New Zealand. On clear days the headland offers unobstructed views across the strait toward the South Island. Reaching the lighthouse requires navigating unsealed coastal tracks, making it a genuine excursion into the rugged, undeveloped edge of the Wellington region.
