Bazaar Mosque

The Bazaar Mosque - also called Suburb Mosque or Murad Bey Mosque - sits above Kruja's bazaar, outside the castle walls. Built in 1533, just seven decades after the death of national hero Skanderbeg, whose resistance against the Ottomans was organised from this very town. The structure measures roughly ten by twenty metres, with a low stone dome and short minaret - a characteristic early-Ottoman provincial design. It survived the communist anti-religious campaign and is officially protected as a Monumente Kulturore. Visit Kruja's bazaar and the mosque sits right at its head. Inside it is plain, with a traditional mihrab and timber detailing; at prayer times its doors open for worshippers from the old town.
