Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi

The Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi stands in Palermo's historic center as a 13th-century Gothic church and designated Italian national monument. It was built by the Franciscan Order, dedicated to Francis of Assisi, whose mendicant friars established a rapid foothold in Sicily from the 1220s onward. The austere facade, punctuated by a prominent rose window, stands in deliberate contrast to the surrounding Baroque streetscape of the Palermitan old town. Inside, the church preserves notable sculpture and funerary monuments commissioned by Sicilian noble families in the 15th and 16th centuries. It remains one of the best-preserved Gothic interiors in Palermo, set within a still-animated neighborhood quarter.
