Basilica di San Domenico

The Basilica di San Domenico is Perugia's largest church, founded in 1401 and long the spiritual home of the Dominican order in Umbria. Its late-Gothic nave is defined by soaring proportions, and the vast tracery window at the apse is considered one of the largest surviving Gothic windows in Italy. The interior contains the tomb of Pope Benedict XI, who died in Perugia in 1304, making the basilica a rare site of papal funerary heritage in central Italy. Recognised as an Italian national monument, the adjacent convent complex now houses the National Museum of Umbria, combining medieval sacred architecture with an archaeological and artistic collection spanning antiquity to the Renaissance.
