Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle sits atop a wooded ridge overlooking the Vale of Belvoir in Leicestershire, its turreted neo-Gothic silhouette visible for miles across the surrounding farmland. The site dates to a Norman motte raised by Robert de Todeni shortly after the Conquest of 1067, though the present structure is largely the result of early 19th-century rebuilding to designs by architect James Wyatt, who gave it the theatrical castle outline seen today. The castle remains the private seat of the Dukes of Rutland — a continuous aristocratic ownership spanning nearly a millennium — and is listed as a Grade I historic building. Visitors can tour state rooms filled with Old Master paintings, tapestries, and ceremonial armour, and walk the landscaped grounds for sweeping views across the vale.
