Pendem Cilacap Fort

Benteng Pendem is a sprawling Dutch colonial fortress on the harbor of Cilacap, on Central Java's southern coast. Built between 1861 and 1879 to defend the port against threats from the Indian Ocean, its pentagonal grounds span up to 10.5 hectares and preserve original barracks, a military hospital, a prison, and eleven cannon emplacements — all constructed in brick and plaster to Dutch colonial military standards. A 500-meter moat, five meters wide and three meters deep, encircles much of the complex. The fort lay buried under dense vegetation for decades before being excavated and opened to visitors in 1987, and is now the main tourist attraction of the Cilacap regency. The labyrinthine corridors, underground passages, and roofless ruins make it one of the more atmospheric surviving examples of 19th-century Dutch military fortification architecture in Indonesia.
