Malta Time-Gun Museum

The Malta Time-Gun Museum in Valletta, operated by heritage foundation Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, tells the story of the guns used to defend Malta across five centuries. Its centerpiece is the time-gun tradition — a daily cannon shot fired at a precise hour so that ships in the Grand Harbour could synchronize their chronometers, a practice mirroring similar traditions in Edinburgh and Cape Town. Visitors join a guided tour through an underground fortification complex, viewing historic artillery pieces and military artifacts spanning from the Knights of St John to the 20th century. Admission (around €10 as of late 2025) includes access to the gun-firing level, where the cannon is discharged live — a tangible highlight that goes well beyond a typical display museum.
