Bertradaburg

Bertradaburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle perched on a 348-metre rocky spur above the village of Mürlenbach in the Vulkaneifel district of Rhineland-Palatinate. The fortress takes its name from Bertrada the Elder, grandmother of Charlemagne, whose Frankish lineage was rooted in this region — the site sits at the geographical heart of the Merovingian Frankish realm. The remaining walls and the castle mound are freely accessible, offering open views across the Eifel valleys below. Classified as a protected cultural monument, the ruin sees little tourist traffic and rewards visitors who combine it with hikes along the surrounding Eifel trails.
