Baraque de Fraiture
At 652 metres, Baraque de Fraiture is the highest point of the Belgian province of Luxembourg, rising above the forested Ardennes plateau near the municipality of Vielsalm. Its name — French for a rough wooden shed — recalls a waystation that once sheltered travellers on the old mountain pass route crossing the plateau. In the winter of 1944–45 the area saw fierce fighting during the Battle of the Bulge; memorials across the surrounding region mark that chapter. A small ski area with three runs serves families and beginners in winter, while an extensive trail network draws hikers and mountain bikers through the summer months. Clear days reward visitors with wide views across the rolling, wooded Ardennes ridgelines.
