Château du Bernstein

Château du Bernstein is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle founded around 1100, perched on a sandstone outcrop amid the forested slopes above Dambach-la-Ville in the Lower Alsace region. Its name, according to local legend, derives not from amber (Bernstein in German) but from Bärenstein — "bear's rock" — suggesting the site was once associated with bears. A nearby crag still carries the name Falkenstein, pointing to an older tradition of naming the area's rocky formations after animals. Listed as a protected historic monument, the site today consists largely of preserved wall remnants and the dramatic natural rock base that once formed the castle's foundation. A forested hiking trail leads up to the ruin, where the canopy opens to views across the Alsatian wine villages and toward the Rhine plain.
