Bitchū Matsuyama Castle

Bitchū Matsuyama Castle, known locally as Takahashi Castle, stands atop a 430-metre mountain ridge in Takahashi city, Okayama Prefecture, and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is one of only 12 surviving original wooden castle keeps in the entire country — a distinction that makes it genuinely rare even by Japanese standards. Founded around 1240 during the Kamakura period, the castle changed hands repeatedly through the volatile Sengoku era before reaching its current form in the 17th century. It is especially renowned for the unkai ('sea of clouds') phenomenon: on cool autumn mornings, mist fills the valley below while the keep rises dramatically above it, a scene that draws photographers from across Japan. A forested hiking trail leads to the keep in about 20 minutes, with panoramic views of Okayama's mountain landscape as a reward.
