Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace is a monumental baroque country house near Woodstock in Oxfordshire, built from 1705 as a gift from the British Crown to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his decisive victory over French and Bavarian forces at the Battle of Blenheim. Designed by John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, it stands as the pre-eminent example of English Baroque architecture and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The palace carries an additional layer of history as the birthplace of Winston Churchill in 1874 — a permanent exhibition inside traces his early life and legacy. Capability Brown redesigned the surrounding landscape in the 1760s, creating the sweeping lake and naturalistic parkland that visitors still walk today alongside formal walled gardens and the grand forecourt colonnades.
