Bou Inania Madrasa

The Bou Inania Madrasa is a 14th-century Islamic college in the UNESCO-listed medina of Fès, commissioned by the Marinid sultan Abū ʿInān Fāris and built between 1350 and 1357. It stands as the pinnacle of Marinid craftsmanship: the central courtyard layers intricate zellij tilework, carved stucco panels, and cedarwood lattices into an ensemble that took nearly a decade to complete. Unusually among madrasas, it also functions as a Friday mosque — it has its own minaret and remains an active place of congregational prayer, offering visitors a rare glimpse of a medieval religious institution still in use. The madrasa was the educational heart of a city long regarded as the intellectual capital of the Islamic west, where scholars studied Quranic sciences and Maliki law within walking distance of the al-Qarawiyyin, one of the world's oldest universities.
