Borj Sud

Borj Sud is a hilltop fortification perched above the southern edge of Fès el-Bali, included in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed medina of Fès since 1981. Built during the Saadian era, the fort was designed both to defend the city and — as some historians argue — to surveil its own population from above. It offers one of Morocco's most sweeping urban panoramas: a vast tapestry of domes, minarets, and tightly packed rooftops stretching across the valley below. Much of the structure survives as a ruin today, with a small military museum housed within. The climb along narrow paths rewards visitors most at dawn or just before sunset, when the light turns the old city gold.
