Bou Inania Madrasa

The Bou Inania Madrasa, set within the ancient medina of Meknès, is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Marinid religious architecture in Morocco. Founded in the 14th century, it functioned as both a Quranic college and a residential hall for scholars traveling from across the Islamic world. Its central courtyard is a layered masterpiece of Moroccan decorative craft: geometric zellige tilework at ground level gives way to intricate carved stucco, topped by panels of hand-chiseled cedarwood — three distinct registers of ornamentation rising toward an open sky. As part of the historic Meknès medina, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Stepping through the low entrance portal, visitors move from the noise of the surrounding souks into an almost startling silence that still carries the atmosphere of a place built for contemplation and study.
