Brauron

An ancient sanctuary of Artemis on the east coast of Attica - level with Athens, on the Erasinos river. Famous for the Arkteia rites: Athenian girls "played the bear" for Artemis - one of the most enigmatic initiation rituals of Greek religion. The surviving stoa dates to the 5th century BC.
