Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport has been Greece's main aviation hub since opening in 2001, replacing the older Ellinikon airport on the Athens Riviera. It is named after the Cretan statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, who shaped modern Greece and championed aviation in the country. The main terminal was designed by Germany's Hochtief AirPort and combines clean glazed facades with an on-site archaeological museum displaying finds unearthed during construction. Today the airport handles more than 28 million passengers a year and serves as the hub of Aegean Airlines. Travellers can reach the Acropolis in about 40 minutes via Metro Line 3.
