Brauroneion

Ancient sanctuary of Artemis on the Athenian Acropolis dating to the 5th century BC

The Brauroneion was the sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia on the Athenian Acropolis, located in the southwest corner of the plateau between the Propylaea and the Chalkotheke. It was dedicated during the rule of the Athenian tyrant Peisistratos in the 6th century BC. Artemis Brauronia, protector of women in pregnancy and childbirth, had her main sanctuary at Brauron on the east coast of Attica; the Acropolis shrine served as an urban extension of that cult. There was no proper temple here — instead an open colonnaded stoa functioned as the sacred space. Today only foundations and inscriptions remain.
