Pandroseion

The Pandroseion was a sanctuary on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens, dedicated to the mythical Pandrosos, a daughter of the legendary king Kekrops I and considered the first priestess of the goddess Athena. It lay at one of the holiest spots on the rock, next to the Erechtheion: tradition placed Athena's sacred olive tree here, the tree with which she was said to have won the contest against Poseidon for patronage over Athens. Only foundations and connection points on the Erechtheion survive of the building itself, together with a 5th-century BC cella and a ring wall enclosing Mycenaean remains. Walking between the Erechtheion and the Acropolis wall today, most visitors pass the spot without noticing, but the on-site sign is worth a pause.
