Château de Montségur

The ruins of Montségur crown a sheer 1,207-metre rocky summit in the eastern Pyrenees, marking the final refuge of the Cathars and one of medieval Europe's most tragic episodes. The visible fortification is not the original Cathar castle but a royal stronghold built on the same peak after the siege of 1244 — the earlier structure was dismantled following the Cathar defeat. In March of that year, around 200 Cathar perfecti surrendered after a nine-month siege by Albigensian Crusade forces; refusing to recant, they were burned en masse at the foot of the hill in a single pyre, effectively ending organised Catharism in Occitania. The site carries a charged atmosphere that has attracted legends ever since — including persistent stories of a Cathar treasure smuggled out before the fall, and later associations with the Holy Grail. Reaching the ruins requires a steep 45-minute climb on uneven paths, rewarded by sweeping views across the Ariège valleys toward the Pyrenean ridgeline.
