Windeck Castle

Burg Windeck — also known as Alt-Windeck — is the ruin of a medieval spur castle perched on a 378-metre rocky promontory above the Bühl district of Kappelwindeck, on the northwestern edge of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg. A listed cultural monument, it represents the string of noble strongholds that once dominated the Bühl valley, exploiting the natural defensibility of a narrow ridge to minimize the need for extensive fortifications. No precise construction date is recorded, placing its origins in the broad medieval period typical of Black Forest hilltop castles. Hiking trails through mixed woodland lead up to the ruins, where the remaining walls and towers open onto wide views across the Rhine plain toward the Vosges Mountains — a rewarding combination of forest walk, ruined masonry, and long-distance panorama.
