Château de Dreistein

The ruins of Château de Dreistein perch on a rocky spur at 628 metres in the central Vosges mountains, barely a kilometre west of the famous Hohenburg monastery on Mont Sainte-Odile. Built around 1300, it forms part of a remarkably dense cluster of nine medieval castles concentrated within just a few square kilometres around the Odilienberg — a concentration rarely matched in Western Europe. The site has been listed as a Monument historique since March 1990. Today it is reached on foot via forest trails from the village of Ottrott, rewarding hikers with sweeping views over the Alsatian plain below.
