Château du Landsberg

The ruined Château du Landsberg sits on a forested spur of the Odilienberg massif at 580 metres elevation, roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Strasbourg above the wine village of Heiligenstein. Founded in 1197, likely by the lords of Landsberg — a prominent Alsatian noble family — the castle once controlled the strategic corridor between the Vosges and the Rhine plain. What survives today is a fragmentary keep and sections of curtain wall, protected as a classified French historic monument. Reached via narrow forest trails, the ruin rewards hikers with an open panorama across the Bas-Rhin plain stretching toward the Rhine and, on clear days, the Black Forest beyond.
