Noonday Gun
Hong Kong
Also known as: Tin Hau temple, Causeway Bay
The Tin Hau Temple at 10 Tin Hau Temple Road is one of the most prominent of Hong Kongs many temples dedicated to Tin Hau, the sea goddess revered by sailors and fishermen along the South China coast. In Hong Kong, where fishing communities dominated for centuries, her cult is especially strong. The present complex was built in 1868 by the Tai family, one of the local Tanka clans who farmed the surrounding land before Causeway Bay grew into the dense city centre. The temple gave its name to the adjacent MTR station and the whole Tin Hau neighbourhood. Today it sits hemmed in by high-rises, with worshippers burning incense, especially on Tin Hau Festival on the 23rd day of the third lunar month.
