Hopewell Centre

A 64-storey, 216-metre office tower completed in 1980 in Wan Chai, Hong Kong - the tallest skyscraper in Asia when it opened. Its signature is the almost perfectly circular footprint: the building rises like a cylinder cut from the hillside, which was treated as something of an architectural provocation at the time. Developer Gordon Wu later added the triangular Hopewell Centre II next door, but the original cylinder remains unmistakable. On the 62nd floor the Revolving 66 restaurant has been turning for decades, one of the few surviving rotating restaurants in Asia. Glass panorama lifts on the outside of the tower still rank among the city's most intense elevator rides - 70 seconds from lobby to the 56th floor with views over the harbour.
