Cape D'Aguilar

Cape D'Aguilar, in Cantonese Hok Tsui, is the south-eastern headland of Hong Kong Island and at the same time the southernmost tip of the island. It is named after Major-General George Charles D'Aguilar, lieutenant governor of Hong Kong in 1843. The site is notable for its heterogeneous rhyolitic tuff cliffs, which have been carved into striking shapes and form features such as Crab Cave. Off the coast lies the Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve, established in 1996 as Hong Kong's first marine reserve, with more than 130 hard coral species. From Shek O Road the headland is about an hour on foot, past the old lighthouse and the University of Hong Kong's marine station. Following the narrow path to the end brings visitors to the exposed rock platform with a view over the open South China Sea.
