Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse
Also known as: Hok Tsui Beacon
Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse, in Cantonese the Hok Tsui Beacon, has stood on the south-eastern headland of Hong Kong Island since 1875 and is the territory's oldest lighthouse. It was designed by the Scotsman David Marr Henderson, who had previously built lighthouses along the China coast for the Imperial Maritime Customs Service. With the opening of the more modern Waglan Lighthouse in 1893 it lost its central role and was decommissioned in 1975 before being reactivated as a tourist beacon. Today the white granite cylinder is a declared monument and can be reached on a one-hour walk from Shek O Road. The approach passes the University of Hong Kong's marine station, while the tower itself opens onto a sweeping view of the open South China Sea.
