18th-century Baroque church on Campo San Zaninovo in Venice's Castello quarter, built 1762.
San Zan Novo is an 18th-century Baroque church in the south-western Castello sestiere of Venice, located on the Campo San Zaninovo. The present building dates to 1762. The epithet in olio recalls the tradition that the Evangelist John was condemned to martyrdom in boiling oil. According to Francesco Sansovino, the word nuovo (new) was added because an older church with the same dedication already existed. The Palazzo Querini faces the church portal across the campo.
