Chiesa di San Gregorio

Former Benedictine monastery church in Dorsoduro, now a conservation studio for Venetian art.

San Gregorio is a former monastery church and abbey in eastern Dorsoduro, situated beside the Rio de la Salute and within sight of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. The church dates back at least to the 9th century; in 989 it was placed under a Benedictine monastery. The current Gothic structure was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today, the church and monastery are no longer used for worship but house a restoration studio specializing in Venetian paintings and sculptures. Its quiet location on a small campo makes it a peaceful contrast to the nearby Salute church.
