Monaco Cemetery

The Cimetiere de Monaco is the only cemetery in the Principality of Monaco, set on the eastern flank of the Rock of Monaco-Ville. It was laid out in 1868, when the rapidly expanding principality needed a central burial ground outside the old town. With usable land extremely scarce in Monaco, burial leases are limited and many plots are reassigned after they expire, a practice common in densely built Mediterranean city-states. Among those buried here are Formula 1 driver Louis Chiron and a number of Russian aristocrats who lived in Monte Carlo in the early 20th century. The cemetery is freely accessible during the day and its hillside position offers views over Fontvieille harbour and the sea.
