Heiligenstädter Friedhof
Vienna
The Doebling Cemetery in Vienna's 19th district was opened in 1880 as the local district cemetery on Hartaeckerstrasse. Much smaller than the Central Cemetery, it is interesting from the angle of Vienna's social history: members of Theodor Herzl's family are buried here, alongside many Jewish Viennese of the Gruenderzeit era, which is why the cemetery suffered heavy damage during the Nazi period. Today most visitors come for a quiet walk past old cast-iron crosses and family vaults, embedded in the calm Cottage neighbourhood between Heiligenstadt and Doebling.
