Colourful Buildings of Cihangir

Cihangir, draped across a hillside west of Beyoğlu, is one of Istanbul's most artistically inclined residential neighborhoods, recognized for its eclectic building stock painted in shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green. The colorful facades are not the result of a planned urban project but accumulated organically over decades — a layered mix of late Ottoman apartments, early 20th-century residential blocks, and occasional Art Nouveau detailing. Visitor reviews consistently note a gap between the photogenic reputation and the actual on-the-ground experience: there is no single street or square that delivers a concentrated visual payoff. The neighborhood's real texture is better found in its independent cafés, bookshops, and antique dealers than in chasing a specific photo spot.
