Theresienwiese

The Theresienwiese is a 42-hectare open ground in western Munich that has hosted Oktoberfest — the world's largest folk festival — almost every year since 1810, drawing around six million visitors over three weeks. The festival originated as a horse race celebrating the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen; the races continued until 1938. At the western edge stands Leo von Klenze's neoclassical Ruhmeshalle (1853), fronted by the monumental bronze Bavaria statue whose hollow interior can be climbed via a spiral staircase to the crown of her head. Outside the festival season, the grounds revert to a largely empty urban meadow used by locals for leisure.

16 days of Oktoberfest a year, otherwise a park with the Bavaria statue, the Frühlingsfest and Tollwood — Munich's biggest festival ground.
