LX Factory

LX Factory occupies the former grounds of the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense in Alcântara, an industrial complex that produced textiles and rope from 1846 until the late 20th century. Since 2007, the site has been converted into a creative campus without sanitizing its industrial bones — bare concrete floors, exposed steel beams, and peeling walls are part of the aesthetic, all in the shadow of the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. The bookshop Ler Devagar, housed in a former press hall with soaring shelves and a suspended bicycle sculpture, has become the complex's most photographed interior. Every Sunday a design market draws crowds for vintage clothing, crafts, and local food producers. By evening the complex shifts into bars and occasional live music, the brick-and-steel surroundings lending a character that newer cultural venues in the city can't replicate.
