The Pit

Also known as: Anlage Landschaftsarchitekturprojekt "Die Grube"

Vienna

The Grube is a Land Art project by Austrian curator and collector Peter Noever in Breitenbrunn on the Neusiedler See, in continuous development since the early 1970s. On a former clay pit Noever opened a rectangular crater that reads like an architectural negative and has, over decades, added walls, stairs, concrete islands, and planted vines. The site is a listed monument and only rarely open to the public, usually for curated tours. Anyone who manages a visit finds a quiet place on the edge of the Pannonian steppe where architecture, landscape, and private domain blur, and which has nothing to do with the usual lakeside tourist routes.
