Koněprusy Caves

The Koneprusy Caves are the largest cave system in the Bohemian Karst, cut into Mount Zlaty kun about 30 kilometres south-west of Prague. They were discovered in 1950 during blasting at the quarry that was about to consume the hill; only the intervention of cavers saved the underground world. Today a 600-metre show route runs through three levels, past flowstone curtains, walls of mountain milk, and a 1.5-million-year-old fossil of the prehistoric horse Equus stenonis. The caves are a listed cultural monument and stay at a steady 10 degrees year round, so even a summer trip calls for a jacket. Above the entrance a small viewpoint overlooks the karst valley and Karlstein Castle.
