East Side Gallery

Stretching 1.3 km along the Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain, this preserved section of the Berlin Wall became an open-air gallery in 1990, months after the Wall fell. More than 100 artists from 21 countries painted the western face of the concrete slabs — most recognizably Dmitri Vrubel's fraternal kiss between Brezhnev and Honecker, and Birgit Kinder's Trabant crashing through the wall. When developers proposed partial demolition for riverside construction in the 2010s, the resulting protests underscored how politically charged even the physical remnants of division remain. The gallery is free and open around the clock; a footpath runs between the murals and the Spree, placing Cold War history directly alongside the river.
