Electricity Museum

Museum in Lisbon's former coal power station, with original turbines and electricity history.

The Museu da Eletricidade in Lisbon's Belém district occupies one of Portugal's most fascinating industrial heritage buildings: the former Central Tejo coal power station, which supplied Lisbon with electricity from 1909 to 1972. The enormous boiler plants, turbines and switchboards are preserved in their original state, offering a vivid impression of early industrial operations. The building itself is an architectural record of multiple construction phases during which the plant was continuously expanded. Opened as a museum in 1990, it now hosts interactive exhibitions on the history of electricity – a place where industrial history becomes tangible.
