Mercado da Ribeira at Cais do Sodré is one of Lisbon's last surviving 19th-century iron-frame market halls, built in 1892 to supply the city's harbor district with fruit and vegetables. In 2014 it became the birthplace of the Time Out Market concept: the left side continues as a traditional produce market, while the right half was transformed into a curated food court bringing together the kitchens of well-known Lisbon chefs and restaurants — a format since replicated in dozens of cities worldwide, with this hall remaining the original. Mornings belong to market traders and early shoppers; evenings fill the iron-vaulted space with locals and visitors choosing between petiscos, ginjinha, Portuguese wine, and a rotating roster of quality restaurants. The coexistence of working market and gastronomic showcase within one historic shell is what makes the Ribeira distinct.
Original 1892 market, eastern hall since 2014 as curated foodhall — Portugal's best chefs under one roof.
