25th of April Bridge

The 25th of April Bridge is a 2,278-metre suspension bridge spanning the River Tagus, linking Lisbon's Alcântara district to the city of Almada to the south. Opened in 1966 as the Ponte Salazar after the then-ruling dictator, it was renamed following the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, which ended nearly five decades of authoritarian rule and gave the bridge its enduring political resonance. Its double-deck design carries a six-lane motorway on the upper level and a railway line below, making it one of the world's few combined road-rail suspension bridges — the third longest of its kind globally. Locals simply call it A Ponte. Seen from the Tagus waterfront at dusk, its red steel towers against the river estuary draw inevitable comparisons to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge — not by accident, as both were built by the same American engineering firm.
