Tram 28

Tram 28 is one of the last surviving lines of Lisbon's historic electrico network — small yellow wooden carriages from the 1930s that creak and sway through the narrow lanes of Alfama, past the Miradouro da Graça, and on through Bairro Alto. The Remodelado-type cars were introduced in the 1920s and refurbished in the 1990s, but retain their distinctive wooden interiors and compact frame. The route tackles gradients of up to 13.5 percent, originally built to serve the everyday transport needs of residents in Lisbon's steep hillside neighborhoods. Today locals heading to work and visitors share the same cramped carriages — during morning rush hour the crowds are dense. Boarding at the Martim Moniz terminus rather than mid-route is the most reliable way to get a seat.
