Belém Tower

Belém Tower is a Manueline fortified tower built between 1516 and 1521 on a small rocky island in the Tagus estuary just west of central Lisbon. Commissioned under King Manuel I at the height of Portugal's Age of Discovery, it originally functioned as a ceremonial gateway and defensive bastion guarding the approach to the capital. Its stone carvings are exceptional: armillary spheres, twisted rope motifs, coral-like tracery, and a statue of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming on the northwestern corner loggia blend Gothic, Moorish, and early Renaissance influences into the distinctly Portuguese Manueline style. The lower levels held prisoners and gunpowder stores over the centuries. Visitors today climb a series of narrow spiral staircases to an open terrace offering broad views over the Tagus, with the sunset turning the limestone facade a deep amber.
