Filmarchiv Austria

Also known as: Austrian Film Archive

Filmarchiv Austria is the national film archive of Austria and safeguards a remarkable audiovisual heritage: more than 260,000 film titles, two million photographs and stills, 48,000 programmes, 16,000 posters, plus extensive equipment, document, and costume collections. Founded in 1955, it has its administrative seat and main vaults in the former Augarten hospital buildings in Vienna's second district. The public side of the archive lives mainly at the Metro Kinokulturhaus in the city centre, where it programmes retrospectives, restored silent films with live music, and themed series on Austrian cinema. For anyone interested in Vienna's film history, the lost cinema of the 1920s, or exile filmmaking, the Filmarchiv often offers the only chance to see these works at all.
