Altona Fish Market

Hamburg's Altona Fish Market has opened every Sunday at dawn since 1703 — the early hour was deliberately chosen to sidestep Hamburg's rival trade regulations and wrap up before Protestant churchgoers stirred. What began as a pure fish trade has expanded into a sprawling folk market selling produce, flowers, antiques, and the obligatory Fischbrötchen. The centrepiece is the red-brick Art Nouveau auction hall from 1896, which survived World War II bombing and now serves as a covered breakfast hall and concert venue with a direct view of the Elbe. A distinctly Hamburg ritual plays out here each week: those still out from Friday night often drift straight to the market by morning, fish roll in hand, watching container ships slide past. Open Sundays 5–9:30 am in summer, 7–9:30 am in winter.
