Köhlbrand Bridge

The Köhlbrand Bridge is a 3.6-kilometer cable-stayed bridge spanning the Köhlbrand arm of the Elbe, opened in 1974 to link the western and eastern sections of Hamburg's port. Designed by engineering firm Grassl with architect Egon Jux, its two 135-meter pylons carry 88 stay cables supporting the roadway without any mid-water piers — a structurally bold solution emblematic of West Germany's postwar engineering ambition. The bridge handles thousands of vehicles daily as the critical artery between Container Terminal Altenwerder and the A7 motorway. From the viewing area in the Waltershof district, the bridge's lit silhouette reflects across the Elbe at night alongside harbor cranes and passing cargo ships — a quieter, industrial counterpoint to the tourist-facing waterfront near the Landungsbrücken.
