Ohlsdorf Cemetery

Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg covers roughly 400 hectares, making it the largest park cemetery in the world. It opened in 1877 to a design by landscape architect Wilhelm Cordes, who laid out the grounds in the English landscape style — more than 500 kilometers of paths wind through old-growth woodland, past ponds and small waterways. The funerary sculpture spanning the Gründerzeit and Wilhelmine periods forms an open-air gallery of 19th- and early 20th-century stonework, with graves of Hamburg mayors, merchants, and cultural figures whose inscriptions chart the city's civic history. Neobaroque chapel complexes punctuate the landscape, and over 36,000 catalogued trees support a notable urban bird population. Visitors arrive for quiet walks, cycling on the wide main paths, or birdwatching — the cemetery functions as a nature reserve as much as a burial ground.
