St. Katharinen

St. Katharinen is one of Hamburg's five Lutheran main churches, its gilded Baroque spire rising above the Nikolaifleet canal near the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district. First documented in the 13th century, the church served for centuries as Hamburg's seafarers' church — Hanseatic merchants and sailors attended services here before putting out to sea. Heavy bombing during World War II left the building in ruins; reconstruction stretched into the 1950s, restoring the brick facade in a spirit true to North German Gothic. Today the church is best known for its high-quality organ and a regular concert series that draws organists from across Europe, making it as much a music venue as a place of worship.
